Palm Pre - Day 1

The Palm Pre was my first opportunity to "camp-out" in front of a store. I didn't go for the hype on the Wii, XBox360, PS3, iPod or iPhone, but for whatever reason I fell hard for the Palm Pre. We had heard rumors that stores would have anywhere between 3 and 10 units per store. Best Buy had the nicest deal 199.99 with no mail-in rebate to deal with but they didn't open until 10 am. Sprint opened at 8 am but there was dealing with the weeks of waiting for the rebate to come back - No Thanks.

Not knowing what the turnout would be with such a limited number of units per store, we decided to err on the side of caution and show up at 5:30 am. It was a ghost town. The next person to show up in line came an hour later at 6:30 am and then another an hour later. After that people started to show up about every 20 minutes until the line hit 11 people around 9 or so. One guy in the line came from the Sprint store where by 8:30 they were already sold out. Quite a few people seemed to hang out in their car waiting until the last minute. What those people didn't know is that the store only had 11 units.

Eventually one of the mobile reps came out told us how many units were available and handed out line tickets. Eleven people would get one unit each. Anyone who showed up late would have to wait until more stock came in and the reps didn't know when the next shipment would be. About six people popped up just as the line tickets were being given out. Their names were put on the wait list.

Luckily Kat and I were first in line and had fun in spite of the 4 1/2 hour wait. The Pre is my father's day present and so I was pretty excited. As soon as the door opened we went in and secured a Pre. There was a little bit of a problem with the computer that delayed us 15 minutes or so, but it gave us a chance to watch the show.

There was at least one person in line skirting the rules and trying to get one of the employees a Pre, or at least that's how it appeared. There were a host of people coming in late surprised that they would have to wait. A few more people wondering what the hub-bub was all about. And still a few more coming from other stores looking for much coveted accessories, like screen protectors and charging pucks. Best Buy had neither due to a delayed shipment or something.

I stuck with just getting the Pre and the in the box accessories and I'm pretty happy. I already had a pair of A2DP BlueTooth stereo head phones.
